What California does not publish here
The state publishes when licensing staff visited, not what they found. We do not hold California’s inspection findings, so nothing on this page tells you whether a visit resulted in a citation. A visit count is a measure of licensing activity, and a facility visited more often is not for that reason a worse one. Read the findings in California’s own facility search.

Finding a place that handles both academics and fun so well is a lifesaver. As a parent of a 6-year-old, I love that they help with homework every day. It makes our evenings at home so much easier and stress-free. Their summer camp is always a blast, too. The kids get a wide range of activities, great field trips, and fun events that keep them busy and happy. One thing that stands out is how they include parents in all their celebrations. It makes the whole family feel welcome and part of the community. The staff are extremely professional and do a wonderful job. If you are looking for quality childcare in San Jose or the Berryessa area, I highly recommend them!
Michael javier Gutiérrez galloMay 13, 2026We visited this school for a scheduled interview/open house with our toddler. While waiting, our child briefly stood on a chair to look around. A staff member told him firmly that standing on chairs was not appropriate, which we understand as a safety rule. However, shortly after we were seated for the interview, the same staff member stated that she had “already seen what she needed to see,” implying that our child was not a fit, before any meaningful interaction or observation took place. During the short interview, our child asked for water, and we were questioned on whether he could sit calmly without being given his bottle, which felt more evaluative than supportive for a child of this age. The experience felt rushed and somewhat dismissive, with limited opportunity for the child to warm up or for parents to ask questions. Families whose children need time to adjust to new environments or who value a more child-centered, developmentally sensitive approach may want to keep this in mind when visiting.
Hongzhen TianJan 16, 2026Challenger Schools do a strong job emphasizing academic performance and achievement. However, there are several serious concerns. Many Challenger students struggle to integrate into group activities and often lack a sense of community and social connection. The main reasons include: 1. In order to manage school task lists, schools strictly require student to follow rigid records, prioritizing control over flexibility. 2. This approach significantly limits the development of student personalities and individual interests. 3. Teachers frequently impose verbal restrictions on what is and isn’t allowed, which discourages initiative and contributes to social challenges. Most of my child friend face the same problem in the middle school. (As expressed by a parent of Middle School)
Han YuSep 15, 2025We are incredibly fortunate to have Ms. Sarah and Ms. Khushali as our son’s Pre-K teachers. Their warmth, patience, and genuine care embody the nurturing every young child deserves. Our son looks forward to school each morning and always comes home happy and excited. They skillfully balance Challenger’s high academic standards with love and understanding, guiding their students with kindness and encouragement. Their attentiveness is truly remarkable — noticing everything from our son’s health and daily mood to his social skills, learning progress, and even reminding him to drink water. The detailed daily feedback they provide is invaluable to our family. Because of their dedication, our son’s reading, math, and logical thinking skills have flourished. As parents, we couldn’t be more grateful for their exceptional commitment and the positive impact they have made on our son’s life.
Yu ZHANGAug 15, 2025As a parent, I generally recommend Challenger School – Berryessa. My son attended for three years, and overall, we had a positive experience. The school gave him a strong academic foundation. My son also made many good friends, and the environment was socially supportive. Most students are from Indian and East Asian backgrounds, which contributes to a community that values academic achievement. That said, no school is perfect, and no environment is completely fair. At times, it felt like some students were given more opportunities—whether in classroom roles, events, or recognition—than others. Despite that, we found the staff to be dedicated and the program effective in helping students build confidence and discipline. Challenger Berryessa did a good job setting my son up for future success, and for that, we’re grateful.
Yanjing WangJun 10, 2025A Truly Enriching Experience at Challenger School - Berryessa Campus We’re incredibly grateful to be part of the Challenger School community. It’s more than a school — it’s a place where our children are nurtured, challenged, and celebrated every day. Our younger daughter is in Pre-K with Ms. Prerna and Ms. Cici, whose warmth and structure have helped her grow into a confident and enthusiastic learner. She looks forward to school every morning — a true testament to the care she receives. Her journey began in Preschool with Ms. Khushali and Ms. Sarah, who made the transition into school life smooth, loving, and joyful. Our older daughter has also thrived at Challenger. In 1st Grade, Ms. Nikolas brought such thoughtful energy and laid a strong academic foundation. Now in 2nd Grade, Mr. Arthur continues to inspire her curiosity and love for learning. His ability to connect with and empower students is remarkable. We deeply appreciate Ms. Avalos, the Elementary Program Director, for her kind and encouraging leadership. She treats every child with care and fosters a truly inclusive environment. The communication between teachers and parents is exceptional — frequent, and personal. It makes us feel informed and supported every step of the way. Seasonal events like the Spring and Winter performances give students the chance to shine and build confidence. Seeing our girls express themselves with pride and joy has been a heartwarming experience. The classrooms are filled with positivity, balancing academics with creativity and fun. Our daughters are thriving — and as parents, that means everything. We can’t thank the staff and teachers at Challenger enough. They don’t just teach — they truly care, uplift, and believe in every child.

- Yes. CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA holds California licence 434400467, currently listed as "LICENSED" by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, first issued on August 28, 1998. Confirm current standing with the agency before enrolling.
What kind of child care licence does CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA hold?
- California licenses CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA as a day care center, a category that covers preschool-age children in a centre-based programme. The category comes from the state's own licence record, not from the provider.
How many children can CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA care for?
- CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA is licensed for up to 192 children at one time. Licensed capacity is a ceiling set by the state, not a count of current enrolment or of available places.
How often has California inspected CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA?
- California records 3 inspection visits to CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA, the most recent on December 9, 2025 and the earliest on record July 22, 2021. Has California visited CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA in response to a complaint?
- California records no complaint-driven visits to CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA. That means no concern prompted a visit on the public record, which is not the same as a clean inspection history: the state does not publish what its visits found.
Who holds the licence for CHALLENGER SCHOOL-BERRYESSA?
- The licence is held by CHALLENGER SCHOOL FOUNDATION. California lists the licensee separately from the facility name, so the two often differ. The facility is in Santa Clara County.
