What California does not publish here
The state publishes when licensing staff visited, not what they found. We do not hold California’s inspection findings, so nothing on this page tells you whether a visit resulted in a citation. A visit count is a measure of licensing activity, and a facility visited more often is not for that reason a worse one. Read the findings in California’s own facility search.

Challenger Sunnyvale is an excellent school and I highly recommend it. Challenger is well known for its rigorous academic curriculum but what has impressed us most is how personally invested the teachers are in helping every child succeed. The teachers take great pride in helping students reach Challenger’s high standards while remaining kind, patient, and supportive. We are particularly grateful to Mr. Wellersdick, the head of the elementary division. My son is very active and Mr. Wellersdick took a great deal of time to talk with him and understand him personally. They even connected over the fact that they both have twin sisters and that shared understanding of how having a twin sister can create difficult dynamics for a young boy helped build deeper trust. He built a genuine rapport with my son while also setting clear and firm expectations for classroom behavior. He was gentle, encouraging, and firm which was exactly what my son needed. Over the course of the summer program, we have seen tremendous improvement in our son’s behavior and attitude toward school. Most importantly, he has expressed interest in transferring to Challenger Sunnyvale. I have always told friends that one of the best ways to evaluate a school or daycare is to observe how your child reacts. If a child is constantly crying and asking to be picked up early, that may be a concerning sign. But when a child does not want to leave at pickup time and even asks to attend the school permanently, it speaks volumes about how happy, supported, and engaged that child feels. The fact that our son is asking us to transfer him to Challenger Sunnyvale says everything about the wonderful way the teachers, staff, and administrators care for and guide their students. We are extremely thankful for the positive experience and strongly recommend this school.
Ken ChenJul 23, 2026Our daughter has been going to Challenger Palo Alto for two years and she had a fine experience. We signed her up to Challenger Sunnyvale for summer but she had such a bad experience that she would cry every morning begging not to go to school. So we ended up not going through the whole summer.
Alireza FathiJul 8, 2026Our son just finished 5th grade, and we are sad to leave (Decided to transfer to a school with high school, so avoid switching school for middle->high). We really wished Challeger could have its own high school. We joined during the pandemic (Kindergarten), and even then, the video lessons and live teacher interaction were excellent. Here is why this school is so special for us: Experienced Teachers: Every teacher we had was a veteran who had taught in Sunnyvale for many years. They didn't just teach facts; they shared life experiences and practical wisdom, which we really appreciated. Great Leadership: The Director keeps everything running smoothly. Academics, scheduling, and activities are always organized perfectly, creating a stress-free environment for parents. Strong Relationships: The bond between teachers and students is wonderful, and the kids form genuine friendships. It’s a respectful, caring community, not a cold pressure-cooker. Excellent Staff: The office and support staff are both incredibly efficient and genuinely warm. They answer emails quickly, solve problems fast, and always greet you with a smile. We started on Zoom and are leaving with a happy 5th grader who found his place and felt safe to grow. Highly recommend!
Wei MiJun 4, 2026We’ve had a very positive experience at Challenger School Sunnyvale. My daughter joined the preschool program when she was just over 2 years and 10 months old. At that time, she could not speak English at all. Before she started, I only had the Challenger command list and taught her a few simple phrases like “stand up” and “sit down.” In less than six months, she surprised me with how much English she had picked up. She came home with so many new words, sounds, and expressions, and it has been amazing to watch her language grow so quickly. We are especially grateful to her teachers, Ms. Sunitha, Ms. Lale, and Ms. Shilpi. They are kind, patient, and caring, and they have helped my daughter feel happy and secure at school. During spring break, I placed her in a different daycare, and she told me she was happy to go back to Challenger afterward. That really showed me how comfortable and attached she feels there. I especially want to praise Ms. Sunitha. She always keeps me informed about my daughter’s day—what she said, what she did, and how she interacted with others. She shares sweet details that help me understand my child better. She also tells me when my daughter helps clean up toys and helps other children know where their things belong. Ms. Sunitha is truly a wonderful teacher and a very kind person. We are very happy with our experience at Challenger Sunnyvale and thankful for the care and support our daughter has received here.
Y.YoungApr 23, 2026My child has been attending this school since February 2026, and he tells me every day how much fun he is having. He is gaining wonderful experiences here on a daily basis. He comes home each day with things he has created through learning activities, crafts, and drawing, and I truly enjoy seeing his work every day as a parent. He absolutely loves his teachers, Shilpi and Sunitha, and I can clearly see how sincerely and thoughtfully they support him, especially since his English skills are still developing. This is a wonderful school, and as a parent, I feel it is a place I can trust with confidence.
Takuya YoshiokaApr 4, 2026Our experience with Challenger School Sunnyvale Campus was disappointing. Known behavioral concerns were not handled with urgency, and there was little empathy during a family emergency. Lack of transparency and parent involvement made the process feel unfair. We withdrew our son and hope meaningful changes are made.

Questions parents ask about CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE
Is CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE a licensed child care provider in California?
- Yes. CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE holds California licence 430710539, currently listed as "LICENSED" by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, first issued on August 31, 1993. Confirm current standing with the agency before enrolling.
What kind of child care licence does CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE hold?
- California licenses CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE as a day care center, a category that covers preschool-age children in a centre-based programme. The category comes from the state's own licence record, not from the provider.
How many children can CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE care for?
- CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE is licensed for up to 168 children at one time. Licensed capacity is a ceiling set by the state, not a count of current enrolment or of available places.
How often has California inspected CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE?
- California records 3 inspection visits to CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE, the most recent on March 5, 2026 and the earliest on record September 20, 2022. The state publishes the dates of these visits but not what they found, so this count reflects licensing activity, not results. Read the findings themselves in California's own facility search.
Has California visited CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE in response to a complaint?
- California records 2 complaint-driven visits to CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE. A complaint visit means someone raised a concern and the state went to look. California does not publish what those visits found, so the count on its own does not say whether any concern was upheld.
Who holds the licence for CHALLENGER SCHOOL-SUNNYVALE?
- The licence is held by CHALLENGER SCHOOL FOUNDATION. California lists the licensee separately from the facility name, so the two often differ. The facility is in Santa Clara County.
