What California does not publish here
The state publishes when licensing staff visited, not what they found. We do not hold California’s inspection findings, so nothing on this page tells you whether a visit resulted in a citation. A visit count is a measure of licensing activity, and a facility visited more often is not for that reason a worse one. Read the findings in California’s own facility search.

I honestly don’t know where to start because I am just so grateful to have found Duck’s Nest. It is truly a gem in Oakland. We first enrolled our son at a French immersion preschool when he was 2, but it quickly became clear that he needed a more play-based environment to really learn and grow. When we discovered Duck’s Nest, and were lucky enough to get a spot everything changed for the better. He had tears for the few few days, but by week 2 he was running to class to be with his amazing teachers and friends. The philosophy is based on Reggio Emilia, which means the teachers take the time to really know each child, understand their unique interests, and help them explore those interests in creative and meaningful ways. It has been incredible to watch my son thrive here. He came into the program with a language delay, and he is now speaking in more full and clear sentences. The administration and teachers are phenomenal they are highly communicative, deeply caring, and so intentional about supporting both children and parents. The parent community is also wonderful. The classrooms have excellent teacher-to-student ratios, and the school makes enrichment a priority, with regular music and art programming that my son absolutely loves. The children spend time outside, create projects together, and are guided to develop socially, emotionally, and academically in ways that feel very natural. Duck’s Nest is not just a school, it’s a community that invests in children and families. I highly, highly recommend it to anyone fortunate enough to get a spot it has been such a gift for our family.
Sharell KrukruboSep 30, 2025We visited the school last month and we were super impressed. The director, Miles, gave us a wonderful tour. It’s in an urban location near MacArthur BART, but the vibes are very sweet and nurturing and we had lots of warm fuzzies during our visit. We saw interesting projects in progress and learned about the school’s philosophy. From what I heard, it seems a bit of a hybrid of the best ideas from Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio-Emilia.

Questions parents ask about DUCKS NEST
Is DUCKS NEST a licensed child care provider in California?
- Yes. DUCKS NEST holds California licence 013422453, currently listed as "LICENSED" by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, first issued on April 11, 2017. Confirm current standing with the agency before enrolling.
What kind of child care licence does DUCKS NEST hold?
- California licenses DUCKS NEST as a day care center, a category that covers preschool-age children in a centre-based programme. The category comes from the state's own licence record, not from the provider.
How many children can DUCKS NEST care for?
- DUCKS NEST is licensed for up to 72 children at one time. Licensed capacity is a ceiling set by the state, not a count of current enrolment or of available places.
How often has California inspected DUCKS NEST?
- California records 4 inspection visits to DUCKS NEST, the most recent on February 10, 2026 and the earliest on record June 15, 2022. The state publishes the dates of these visits but not what they found, so this count reflects licensing activity, not results. Read the findings themselves in California's own facility search.
Has California visited DUCKS NEST in response to a complaint?
- California records no complaint-driven visits to DUCKS NEST. That means no concern prompted a visit on the public record, which is not the same as a clean inspection history: the state does not publish what its visits found.
Who holds the licence for DUCKS NEST?
- The licence is held by DUCKS NEST. California lists the licensee separately from the facility name, so the two often differ. The facility is in Alameda County.
