What California does not publish here
The state publishes when licensing staff visited, not what they found. We do not hold California’s inspection findings, so nothing on this page tells you whether a visit resulted in a citation. A visit count is a measure of licensing activity, and a facility visited more often is not for that reason a worse one. Read the findings in California’s own facility search.

I love this place. My daughter came here after struggling at another daycare due to naps. Hillcrest was so accommodating and had a communal feel where teachers would help each other out and kids' needs were addressed across classrooms. My daughter moved between a few classrooms during her time there and all the teachers have been great in different ways. It feels like placements are made based on your kid's personality and preferences. Most recently my daughter has been in the pre-school class for kids prepping to go to TK or K. I regularly get photos of her practicing writing and math in a low stakes environment. Also, the facilities are really nice with a beautiful shady outdoor play area.
Mark PooleMay 29, 2026Could not be more happy with Hillcrest Preschool! A wonderful experience for my daughter and we plan to enroll our son next year! Teachers go above and beyond embracing creativity and authenticity. A lovely school that's recently been renovated. Clean classrooms and a nice outdoor play area. Forever grateful for our experience.
Jessica LeitchSep 24, 2025We’ve had such a wonderful experience at this preschool! Our daughter was here for one year and truly thrived. Ms. Kelli, Ms. Gaby, and Ms. Kaylee and the other teachers are absolutely amazing—they genuinely care about the kids and create such a nurturing, fun environment. They were especially supportive during potty training, which made a huge difference for our family. Recently, the school welcomed an interim director, and we sincerely hope she becomes permanent. She brings such heart and care to the children’s experience, planning fun activities and making each day special. She’s also introduced a new check-in system with an app, which makes drop-off and pick-up so much easier while also keeping parents informed about daily updates, injuries, and communication. This preschool is on a wonderful path, and we’re so grateful for the teachers and leadership who are making it such a positive place for kids to learn and grow!
Hanna KhazriSep 15, 2025My family could not be happier with Hillcrest Preschool for our 2 daughters, ages 2 and 4. Because it's a smaller school, all the staff know our children, and it feels like a big family community. The teachers truly care about the children and their developmental/educational growth. The calendar and hours are also great for 2 full-time working parents. We are so grateful we found this preschool!
Lindsay GoldmanApr 24, 2025We appreciate the safe and intimate environment of this preschool. It’s a close-knit community where every staff member knows your child’s name and is always kind and welcoming. The tuition is reasonable, which is a plus. However, we expected more of a preschool experience, but it felt more like a daycare. Over the three months our child attended, we didn’t see much progress in terms of learning. While some teachers, like Miss Alyssa, Miss April, and Miss Kelly, seem more engaging, our experience with Miss Susana was not ideal. She seems better suited for quieter, more passive children, whereas we believe kids should have a more dynamic and stimulating learning environment. Additionally, we felt that the director and staff struggled with effectively managing conflicts between children. Instead of addressing the issues directly, the response often seemed to favor asking parents to keep their child at home, which we found disappointing. We believe the school has potential with its warm environment, but improvements in teaching quality and conflict resolution would make a significant difference.
Anh TranMar 30, 2025I absolutely adore Hillcrest Preschool. My son went there from ages 3 until just before he turned 6. Then my daughter went there from 2 to 5. All in all, I was taking my babies to Hillcrest for 6 years. Teachers - every teacher there cares about those children as if they were their own. It is a small preschool so it is very intimate and all the teachers get to know all the kids. All of the teachers I've interacted with have had years of preschool experience, some with masters in lifespan development. My daughter, who has attachment issues, felt so at peace at Hillcrest. The communication with the teachers after school helped me feel a sense of security, and partnership as I navigated the growth of my little ones. They worked with me on parenting techniques and shared invaluable resources to help me with my son. Kinder-prep - both of my children had learning activities that were age appropriate around colors, shapes, numbers, and letters. But it didn't stop there! There were interesting and fun activities that also involves science, social learning, motor skills and more! It was clear that in comparison to their kindergarten peer-set, that my children had had the best kinder preparation! Although that didn't stop me from begging the director, Dana, to continue education at Hillcrest through elementary school so my kids could stay there. Safety - since it is so small, all the teachers know all the parents and children. They get to know each parent to ensure the children are getting the care they require and deserve. The physical safety of the school is also top notch! There are two gates that require passcodes to even enter the school! There are also so many fun events and activities whether it is holiday related or birthday related or graduation related, there were many opportunities for parents to come and be involved in the classroom. Dana and the entire Hillcrest preschool staff made my children's preschool experience better than I could have imagined. My daughter is in kindergarten now and although it wasn't long ago, and she loves kindergarten, she still talks about how much she misses her teacher, Miss Alyssa, and her "old school." My son, although he is now 8 years old, still talks about how much he misses preschool too. I would, and do, recommend this school to anyone who is interested in doing what is best for their child during these important and formative years.

Is HILLCREST PRESCHOOL a licensed child care provider in California?
- Yes. HILLCREST PRESCHOOL holds California licence 370800609, currently listed as "LICENSED" by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, first issued on July 1, 1974. Confirm current standing with the agency before enrolling.
What kind of child care licence does HILLCREST PRESCHOOL hold?

How many children can HILLCREST PRESCHOOL care for?
- HILLCREST PRESCHOOL is licensed for up to 71 children at one time. Licensed capacity is a ceiling set by the state, not a count of current enrolment or of available places.
How often has California inspected HILLCREST PRESCHOOL?
- California records 3 inspection visits to HILLCREST PRESCHOOL, the most recent on April 9, 2026 and the earliest on record May 17, 2023. The state publishes the dates of these visits but not what they found, so this count reflects licensing activity, not results. Read the findings themselves in California's own facility search.
Has California visited HILLCREST PRESCHOOL in response to a complaint?
- California records no complaint-driven visits to HILLCREST PRESCHOOL. That means no concern prompted a visit on the public record, which is not the same as a clean inspection history: the state does not publish what its visits found.

- The licence is held by UNIVERSITY CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO. California lists the licensee separately from the facility name, so the two often differ. The facility is in San Diego County.
