What California does not publish here
The state publishes when licensing staff visited, not what they found. We do not hold California’s inspection findings, so nothing on this page tells you whether a visit resulted in a citation. A visit count is a measure of licensing activity, and a facility visited more often is not for that reason a worse one. Read the findings in California’s own facility search.

Our twins have been at RA for three magical years. It has been a joyful, nurturing place for our family and we feel incredibly grateful that our children got to spend their preschool years here. We recommend RA wholeheartedly. The biggest change isn't just what our kids have learned, it's who they've become. They're confident, compassionate kids who love learning, and we know RA played an enormous role in that. Jiali is a loving director who is passionate about early childhood development, and also has extraordinary executive skills, so everything runs smoothly with the help of her, Jiawen, and their amazing staff. Academics. Our kids are speaking and reading Mandarin, and we have been impressed by their language development over the years. It’s amazing to hear them chatting with each other in Mandarin, singing songs around the house, and translating words for family members. Jiali and her staff find creative ways of making learning fun, like learning about metamorphosis by showing an actual caterpillar transform into a butterfly. RA has also taught them English letters and math, and the kids will enter school a year ahead academically. We’re so grateful they have such a strong foundation and have the confidence to excel in school. Responsibility. RA intentionally has times where the bigger kids interact with the smaller kids by helping them, fostering a care for others. Our kids have come home excited about what the “babies” did today and know several by name. RA has also taught our kids to clean up after themselves and did all the potty training (whenever friends ask us how we potty trained our twins, we shrug and say “preschool did it”). Communal care. RA has a low student-teacher ratio. Although each kid is assigned to a class with a teacher, all the teachers know all the kids’ names. Over the years, our kids have come home with heartwarming stories of their interactions with all of the teachers. It’s comforting that a collective group of caring adults is part of our village. Safety. Our kids have extremely severe food allergies and started at RA at an age where they were still putting things in their mouths and too young to clearly communicate whether they were feeling bad. We weren’t sure they’d be able to go to any preschool safely and were prepared to homeschool. During our tour, Jiali patiently walked through every safety protocol and and answered every question we had. She did this while playing with our kids, making them giggle and relax in a new environment. We left feeling confident in her ability to keep our kids safe. In three years, we’ve had 0 incidents, which is incredible. RA is also a preschool that is great for parents: Schedule and logistics. RA’s schedule is convenient for busy parents. Even during breaks, parents have the option of paying a daily rate for care. RA provides healthy food for the kids (morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack which is functionally an early dinner), saving parents a lot of time and energy. Communication. RA is great at communicating about illnesses, breaks, etc. It’s easy to message them via the BrightWheel app or ask at pickup/drop off. RA sends monthly updates with pictures and videos, which is great because they’re focusing on caring for the kids, but parents also get lovely updates to re-watch for years to come. Community. We’ve become good friends with other families, and we know those relationships will continue long after preschool. There’s a WhatsApp group where parents share helpful information too. Peace of mind. More than anything, we're grateful for the love our children received every single day. Every teacher knew them, celebrated them, and cared for them as individuals. As parents, there is no greater gift than dropping your children off each morning knowing they're safe, loved, and excited to be there. We will always look back on our years at RA with gratitude.
E KAug 1, 2026Jiali and the teachers at Richmond Academy taught our kids everything from the time they were 1 year old. When we applied for private schools in SF, we got into 5 out of 5 schools we applied to, and I attribute how prepared our kids were for the evaluations due to Richmond Academy. If you want your kids to learn Mandarin, math, manners, and kindness — this is the spot. When we were deciding which kindergarten to attend, we decided not to continue Mandarin immersion because, frankly, our kids would be bored waiting for other kids to catch up. You won’t need to keep switching schools each year; Richmond Academy handles all levels, including daycare, TK, and PK. They let us focus on our careers, knowing our kids were taken care of 8-5pm. Even when we got off work earlier, we would leave them with Jiali, knowing they were happy and thriving at school. Lastly, while many places were closed during Covid, they didn’t let us down and found a way to stay safe and open. We had no learning loss to deal with. Forever grateful for the time our children spent with Richmond Academy!
Thomas WuAug 25, 2024From the moment I walked into Richmond Academy two years ago, I knew this preschool was perfect for my then two-year-old. Jiali (owner), Jojo (JiaWen), and all the teachers my little one has had over the years have been wonderful. This preschool had everything I wanted: chinese immersion, large open space, food provided, indoor playground, immaculate bathroom, security and convenient drop off location. I also appreciated that Richmond Academy focused on teaching older children to help younger children, a practice I hoped my little one would learn given they are an only child. Having this ingrained in my little one at school has helped them play well with others, watch out for smaller kids, and also share their toys! Another milestone was potty training. At the beginning of my child's time at Richmond Academy, I brought diapers. However, about a month or so later, I was informed they no longer needed them. I was baffled but so appreciative that they took care of this for me. As parents and guardians, it can be hard to choose a preschool. For me, I am grateful I chose Richmond Academy to start off my little one’s education and development. Jiali, her teachers, and staff are very passionate about what they do and I can see they love working with children.
Jenny LeeJun 14, 2024I've had 3 kids attend Richmond Academy and can whole heartily attest to the wonderful program and people here. Jiali (the founder), Jiawan and all teachers are very nurturing and have amazing teaching skills. My kids were constantly singing mandarin songs and reciting poetry at home. I couldn't even get them to recite some of the easiest things I was teaching them in english at home yet they were reading mandarin so confidently. I was so shocked I tested them to make sure it wasn't all memorization. They could really recognize the characters. WOW Parents, they potty train! Need I say more? They do a super job in this area and the new facility has the best kid's restroom space I've ever seen. A few weeks of potty training was all it took them and I was elated the day they returned my diapers. LOL I must also mention they provide lunch and snacks for the kids. The lunch is nutritious and homemade in house. My kids always spoke positively about the lunch and I very often hear soups and veggies included which made this mama very happy. I can't express enough how nurturing the teachers are and the safe environment they provide. All are so warm and lovely that the kids feel secure and excited to go to school. Hours are very flex, esp for working folks considering they open early and close late. During vacation breaks, the school helps out parents to provide optional school days for an additional fee. This was very convenient vs finding separate care. The first time I toured RA and met Jiali, I knew in my heart of hearts this is where the kids need to go to school. Truth is I forfeited my deposit I placed elsewhere and secured my twins' spot at RA right away. Best decision I made for them. Even if you are touring around, just give RA a chance and I'm confident you'll love the space and school as much as we have. FYI I'm so envious of the play structure Randy, the handy husband built. You'll see all all the dedication and heart they put in the school and kids. RA is a gem and I'm grateful I found this school for my children.
Valerie LamMay 15, 2024I've been sending both my kids to RA/RHA since 2018 because Jiali and her team have been so wonderful. This review is specifically for my daughter, who has been attending since 2022. First and foremost, the teachers are so caring and wonderful - my daughter excitedly tells me about her day everyday and she is so happy to go to school. I really appreciate the videos/photos that RA will post so we can get an update on what goes on during school. They've also been so accommodating with us and my erratic work schedule (sometimes I need to suddenly pick up early or drop off late, etc. they've been nothing but accommodating). I feel like both my kids truly thrived here through the nurture and care given by the teachers. Secondly, there's a wonderful parent community at RA which has engaged in sharing updates, set up playdates, etc. You can tell not only do the teachers/Jiali care about the students but so do the parents who send their kids here. Third, the mandarin teaching has been exceptional. In fact, sometimes they need to tell ME what a Chinese word means because they've learned so much. My daughter will be graduating to K soon and we'll truly be sad to leave this place. Would highly recommend RA 1000x over

Questions parents ask about RICHMOND ACADEMY
Is RICHMOND ACADEMY a licensed child care provider in California?
- Yes. RICHMOND ACADEMY holds California licence 384004300, currently listed as "LICENSED" by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, first issued on May 7, 2021. Confirm current standing with the agency before enrolling.
What kind of child care licence does RICHMOND ACADEMY hold?
- California licenses RICHMOND ACADEMY as a day care center, a category that covers preschool-age children in a centre-based programme. The category comes from the state's own licence record, not from the provider.
How many children can RICHMOND ACADEMY care for?
- RICHMOND ACADEMY is licensed for up to 72 children at one time. Licensed capacity is a ceiling set by the state, not a count of current enrolment or of available places.
How often has California inspected RICHMOND ACADEMY?
- California records 5 inspection visits to RICHMOND ACADEMY, the most recent on May 8, 2026 and the earliest on record May 2, 2022. The state publishes the dates of these visits but not what they found, so this count reflects licensing activity, not results. Read the findings themselves in California's own facility search.
Has California visited RICHMOND ACADEMY in response to a complaint?
- California records 1 complaint-driven visit to RICHMOND ACADEMY. A complaint visit means someone raised a concern and the state went to look. California does not publish what those visits found, so the count on its own does not say whether any concern was upheld.
Who holds the licence for RICHMOND ACADEMY?
- The licence is held by RUSSIAN HILL ACADEMY LLC. California lists the licensee separately from the facility name, so the two often differ. The facility is in San Francisco County.
