What California does not publish here
The state publishes when licensing staff visited, not what they found. We do not hold California’s inspection findings, so nothing on this page tells you whether a visit resulted in a citation. A visit count is a measure of licensing activity, and a facility visited more often is not for that reason a worse one. Read the findings in California’s own facility search.

We absolutely LOVE this preschool! The three teachers in the pre-school are fantastic - so thoughtful in their curriculum and SO full of love for the children. We love that it is a combination of montessori style and classical learning. An added bonus is that the classroom itself is beautiful - it has high ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, and is extremely organized. The extended aftercare program and timing is also great for working parents - my son did afterschool soccer and spanish classes during some of that time. Even at 5:30 pm he doesn't want to leave. I can't speak higher of this pre-school and the teachers there.
Sadie JamesonJul 1, 2026We are not Catholic and we love this school and would recommend for people from all backgrounds. We live in the inner Richmond and toured every option in the neighborhood for our almost 3 yo. Stella Maris was easily the best option. We immediately felt the love, organization, dedication of the teachers and staff and really appreciated that the preschool is within a larger school ecosystem. The preschool has it all - heavy Montessori focus with adorable handmade 'toys', arts, motor skills development, learning letters, and just learning how to be a little kid! They have a cute playground (with sandbox!) and trikes, and a water table etc. And of course, the pricing is great. Tour! Meet the teachers! Our daughter has grown from a toddler into a confident, curious little kid thanks to the teachers, staff, other kids, and community.
Carla FaragunaJul 1, 2026I would give Star of the Sea Preschool 10 stars if it were possible. We are having a wonderful experience there with our little one who comes home happy every day, excited to share everything she has learned. The program includes Montessori, learning letters and numbers, playing, reading stories, learning Spanish, and some religion. The teachers are first rate, incredibly warm, kind, and professional. The facility is excellent with a large, airy classroom with lots of windows and a big play yard with a play structure and a sandbox. We've enjoyed getting to know families in the preschool and at Stella Maris. I highly recommend this preschool.
Katherine HarrisonFeb 11, 2026Star of the Sea Preschool is truly special and we feel so blessed to have found it. Our son attended in 2022 and is now in 1st grade at Stella Maris Academy on the same campus, and now our daughter is there. There are so many things we love about this preschool, but what stands out most are the exceptional teachers. They are incredibly nurturing, warm, and genuinely devoted to each child’s growth — not just academically, but emotionally and spiritually. The curriculum is so rich and diverse and strikes the perfect balance of structure, learning, and play: Catholic catechism, arts and crafts, Spanish language from native speaking teachers, Montessori lessons from Montessori-certified teachers, music from classically trained music teacher, field trips to the public library, special visits from older students for reading time, interactive lessons on life skills to become more independent and confident, and much more. The preschool environment itself is extremely clean, calm, and thoughtfully organized — a peaceful little haven within the larger TK–8 school. We love that the children benefit from being part of the wider school community, yet still enjoy their own cozy, dedicated space designed just for them. The teachers are highly accessible and communicative so you always know what they are learning as a class and how your child is doing. We couldn’t imagine a more joyful and faith-filled start to our child’s education!
Lisa BerensOct 21, 2025Our oldest had such an incredible year here. The teachers are truly called by God to teach young children—they remind me of Miss Honey from Matilda, which in my book is the highest compliment! They are patient, kind, and nurturing, which is exactly what toddlers need. The teachers prepared our son beautifully for his transition to transitional kindergarten, and we couldn’t be happier with his experience. We can’t wait to send our younger two boys to Star of the Sea Preschool!
Kathleen QuillianOct 15, 2025Choosing Star of the Sea Preschool has been one of the best decisions we’ve made as parents. My son isn’t the type who adjusts quickly to new places, but something about Star of the Sea made him feel safe right away, it felt like he belonged. From day one, he walked in with confidence and has never once cried at drop-off. That alone tells you how special this school is. I can’t say enough about the amazing teachers — Mrs. Janelli, Ms. Novoa, and Ms. Brooks. They aren’t just teachers; they are gentle guides who truly see, hear, and care for each child. My son loves them deeply, and we do too. He’s growing not just academically, but as a person; learning kindness, patience, social skills, independence, and responsibility. He taught me songs he learnt from the school too. There was one moment I’ll never forget. I saw him fall at the playground, and before a teacher even noticed, the older children ran to him, asking, “Are you okay?” and trying to help him up. It was such a pure moment of kindness. It showed me this school doesn’t just teach, it models love and compassion every day. Star of the Sea preschool is more than a school. It’s a community built on love, values, and heart. We feel truly blessed to be part of it. And honestly, I don’t know how we’re supposed to move on to kindergarten after this, we’re already emotionally attached! 😂

Is STAR OF THE SEA PRESCHOOL a licensed child care provider in California?
- Yes. STAR OF THE SEA PRESCHOOL holds California licence 384001604, currently listed as "LICENSED" by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, first issued on February 21, 2007. Confirm current standing with the agency before enrolling.
What kind of child care licence does STAR OF THE SEA PRESCHOOL hold?

How many children can STAR OF THE SEA PRESCHOOL care for?
- STAR OF THE SEA PRESCHOOL is licensed for up to 30 children at one time. Licensed capacity is a ceiling set by the state, not a count of current enrolment or of available places.
How often has California inspected STAR OF THE SEA PRESCHOOL?
- California records 4 inspection visits to STAR OF THE SEA PRESCHOOL, the most recent on April 29, 2026 and the earliest on record January 31, 2023. Has California visited STAR OF THE SEA PRESCHOOL in response to a complaint?

- The licence is held by ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP OF SAN FRANCISCO, THE. California lists the licensee separately from the facility name, so the two often differ. The facility is in San Francisco County.
