What California does not publish here
The state publishes when licensing staff visited, not what they found. We do not hold California’s inspection findings, so nothing on this page tells you whether a visit resulted in a citation. A visit count is a measure of licensing activity, and a facility visited more often is not for that reason a worse one. Read the findings in California’s own facility search.

A wonderful, caring environment for young children. My daughter has been attending Step-by-Step since she was 18 months old. Thanks to the incredible, attentive teachers she transitioned very smoothly. She's really blossomed and has had very rapid, noticeable development of language, social skills and independent self care. Ms. Marzi, Ms. Jaleh and Ms. Vanessa are wonderful! They're communicative and post lots of updates on the children's work and curriculum. I also appreciate that this is true Montessori school following a Montessori curriculum. Highly recommended!
Sisi ChenMar 3, 2026A wonderful preschool with kind teachers and a warm environment. My daughter loves coming here every day. The teachers are patient, caring, and very professional. The classroom is always clean, organized, and full of fun learning activities. I feel comfortable and confident knowing my daughter is safe, happy, and learning new things every day. Highly recommend Step By Step Montessori!
FNU NeelabMay 10, 2025Great school, low teacher to student ratios, they are a true Montessori preschool. Teachers are very knowledgeable in early education. Our son has learned so much going to this school and they’re very helpful with potty training as well. Their tuition is also affordable for the area. Couldn’t be more happy with the school.
Sarah LowJan 24, 2025Step-by-Step is a great school that is culturally welcoming and relevant, promotes independences, and high achievement. Our family has had the pleasure of having four boys attend Step-by-Step Montessori. We are more than pleased with all that the school has to offer educationally, socially, and culturally. My husband and I are both educators and we were able to experience how Step-by-Step is able to transfer student to elementary school effectively. We high recommend to Step-by-Step to people of all backgrounds because we were able to see the beautiful way that kids were taught, loved, and included culturally.
Denielle MasonDec 14, 2024I have two kids at Step by Step, with my oldest having attended since 2022. I've had consistently positive interactions with the team. Growing up as a person of color, I often had the experience of being the only, or one of very few, non-white kid/s in school settings. It's important to me that my kids don't feel similarly isolated, and that they're able to be in diverse settings. I've found that with Step by Step. Both the teaching staff and student body are very diverse and go out of their way to incorporate different cultures into their lesson plans. Thank you, Ms. Marzi & team!
Charles TaylorDec 14, 2024I LOVE this school. My husband and I visited various preschools in Concord, Danville, Walnut Creek, and Pleasant Hill, and we instantly felt the welcoming and warmth of the culture at this school. Being that we were looking for a preschool for the first time, the process of choosing one that best fits your family’s values can be so hard. All other schools felt very rigid, cold, and lacking a warm touch to how they deliver services. When we walked into Step by Step Montessori Preschool, my husband and I instantly felt welcomed and cared for. I knew this is how my child would feel. We had so many worries, for example, our child wasn’t potty trained and was still using a pacifier at that time. So when we brought up these worries, the executive director Marzi was so understanding and willing to work with us. All other schools instantly shut that down and would say “they have to be potty trained to be in x, y, or z class” or “you have to pay extra for us to potty train.” Ms. Marzi did not add more shame and worries to the process. Instead, she worked with us and was allowing us to have autonomy and choice over what we thought would be the best fit (in terms of what class our child would flourish in) for our child. My child has been in this school now for over 2 years and she absolutely loves her teachers. Marzi es very well connected to the school and knows the children. My child has gone through some transitions in her life, including welcoming a sibling and having surgery, to mention a few. And all the teachers, including Marzi who is well connected to the school community, have been exceptional at supporting my child, and they are very, very in tuned with how to best support her and therefore, share the plan with us so we can share our input and implement it the same way. Ms. Rachel and Ms. Vanessa are just wonderful. They love their jobs and you can tell. One time, we shared a concern we had about our child’s anxiety around not wanting to nap at school. Ms. Rachel shared with my husband “I’ve been thinking about this on my way home, and I think I know where it’s coming from!” That just shows how much care and thought comes into helping each child flourish, even when teachers are off schedule. We absolutely love Ms. Rachel and we believe we found the best teacher :) Ms. Vanessa is also a wonderful teacher. She has been very supportive; she is very invested and in tuned with each child’s progress. My child absolutely loves Ms. Vanessa and shares how kind she is to her. In summary, this school offers such a welcoming, warm, and diverse community and I am so happy that our family gets to be part of it.

Questions parents ask about STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI
Is STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI a licensed child care provider in California?
- Yes. STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI holds California licence 073404969, currently listed as "LICENSED" by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, first issued on April 14, 2005. Confirm current standing with the agency before enrolling.
What kind of child care licence does STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI hold?
- California licenses STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI as a day care center, a category that covers preschool-age children in a centre-based programme. The category comes from the state's own licence record, not from the provider.
How many children can STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI care for?
- STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI is licensed for up to 40 children at one time. Licensed capacity is a ceiling set by the state, not a count of current enrolment or of available places.
How often has California inspected STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI?
- California records 2 inspection visits to STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI, the most recent on April 2, 2026 and the earliest on record December 16, 2022. The state publishes the dates of these visits but not what they found, so this count reflects licensing activity, not results. Read the findings themselves in California's own facility search.
Has California visited STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI in response to a complaint?
- California records 3 complaint-driven visits to STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI. A complaint visit means someone raised a concern and the state went to look. California does not publish what those visits found, so the count on its own does not say whether any concern was upheld.
Who holds the licence for STEP BY STEP MONTESSORI?
- The licence is held by HAGHIGHI, MARZI. California lists the licensee separately from the facility name, so the two often differ. The facility is in Contra Costa County.
