  • My daughter just wrapped up her first year at Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School and my son just finished his third and final year. Lesley, the school's director and pre-K teacher, and Ada, the morning 2s and 3s teacher, have been absolutely incredible, especially where my son has been concerned. My son is a high-needs child, and Lesley worked tirelessly, even in her free time, to research and implement ways to help him be successful. Even on his toughest days, when as his parents we sometimes felt at a loss for what to do next, she always saw the beauty in him and met him with the same warmth and support she gave him on his best days. We eventually got him an IEP with MCPS and we couldn't be more grateful. Lesley kept my husband and me in the loop, worked with his specialists along the way, and filled out every evaluation, form, and document we asked her to as we navigated his diagnosis. My daughter has loved her time in the morning class with Ada. She's given the freedom to be herself, find her footing in the whimsical outdoor space, and explore at her own pace. Even on tough days, Ada handles everything with such grace and poise that I wish I could bottle it and keep it for myself. I saw this school in passing three years ago, and after learning more about it I decided it was the only preschool I'd ever apply to — even though I'd never intended to send my kids to preschool. I'm so glad I did. Through the school I also discovered the Working Parents Assistance Program (WPA), which we've utilized every year and it's made a world of difference for us. What makes this place truly special is its community. Everyone here becomes family, with unwavering support and genuine friendship. The school events are incredible, the parent involvement is unmatched, and in the most cooperative spirit, we get to watch each child grow and learn while we, as parents, learn to slow down, take a step back, and grow right alongside them.

  • My child has attended this school for two years, from age two to four. In that time, I have seen them grow from a child who was fearful of large groups and social interactions to a kid excited to see peers and teachers. The children do beautiful framed art projects and gorgeous journals they bring home at the end of each year. The teachers are caring, invested and help each child grow. Oh - and the outdoor and indoor classrooms are beautiful.

  • Our 3 year old is thriving at TPCNS! He is excited to go to school every day and enthusiastically tells about what (and with whom) he played, what he learned, and if he had any jobs that day. The fact the it is outdoors is perfect since he is very high energy. We also love the cooperative model--we are new to the area and have made friends quickly through the school. I also co-op in the classroom once a month and have gotten to know each of the students in the class. I have also learned so much from watching the talented teachers engage with the students--I try to bring the lessons home, which has been great for our family. We walk to school, and find the whole neighborhood accessible and welcoming. Perhaps most importantly, the school has values that align with ours - our child is growing into a kind and emotionally mature person with a sense of curiosity and great communication skills. We are so grateful we found TPCNS!

  • We are huge fans of this preschool! Our eldest attended for two years (he’s in K now) and is jealous every day of his younger sibling who goes there now! The outdoor environment is magical, the learning is fun and creative, the teachers are caring and inventive, and we’re thrilled to be members. My kids have become more resilient (happy in all kinds of weather!) and more creative in their play with other kids (and by themselves!) Highly recommend!!

  • My son has attended the Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School, or purple school, for the past 1.5 years and I couldn’t be happier! So much so that he has enrolled for his third year and my second son is enrolled for his first year. My son has absolutely relished his time in the classroom and outdoors, and looks forward to it every week day (rain, snow, or sunshine) - the backyard is truly an oasis. And, I LOVE the teachers - they’re empathetic, thoughtful, inclusive, and very deliberate about teaching and learning. I think that attending this school will help my boys become better men. I am also grateful for the friendships that I’ve gained as a result of being in this community. I couldn’t recommend purple school more highly!

  • We have had 2 children go through this school (2017-2020 & 2023-2026). At its core, it is truly a unique model, with an emphasis on providing experiences rooted in children having intimate knowledge of: the outdoors; how to be in community (with classmates, teachers, all parents, and also the greater community); how to interact with a wide range of educational stimuli; conflict resolution; language development; rich and life-imprinting paths to literacy; numeracy and foundational math skills; and so much more. Because of its cooperative model it asks a lot of parents, but when in action the return on investment is nothing you could possibly buy. Without extended family close by we have a found-family in our children's classmates' families. We can, and have, relied on them in the good times and the hard. Even with extensive professional knowledge of child development, the parent education I have gleaned from the teachers and other parents here have revolutionized my approach to parenting and teaching.

What does Maryland record about Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School's standing?

Maryland records Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School's status as "In Good Standing". Maryland publishes inspection findings separately at checkccmd.org and they are not included here.

Does Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School operate all year?

Maryland records Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School as a "School Year Only" programme. That is the schedule on the licence record rather than a timetable, so confirm term dates and closures with the provider.

Does this page show inspection results for Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School?

No. Maryland inspects licensed child care programmes and publishes the results through Check Child Care Maryland at checkccmd.org. Those reports are not included here, so nothing on this page reflects Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School's inspection history either way. This page's record comes from Maryland Family Network's LOCATE service, which carries licence and status data rather than inspection findings.
