  • I am extremely disappointed and upset with our experience at the Boys & Girls Club of Oyster Bay-East Norwich summer camp. My child has special needs, including ADHD, and has an IEP specifically outlining the supports and accommodations he needs to be successful. I provided the camp with a copy of his IEP because I wanted to make sure the staff understood his needs and could appropriately support him. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Instead of receiving the additional patience, understanding, structure, and support that my child needs, we were repeatedly contacted about complaints regarding his behavior (running around the room, sticking his tongue out at his counselors, not listening to directions, etc). It became very clear to us that some of the staff simply did not have the knowledge or experience necessary to work effectively with a child who needs extra support. What was especially frustrating was when we tried to communicate these concerns. Rather than listening to what we were telling them about our child’s needs, we were essentially told that the counselor has a “master’s degree in education”. As parents, we found that response incredibly dismissive. Having a master’s degree does not automatically mean someone is experienced in working with every child with ADHD or other special needs. We were not questioning someone’s education or credentials—we were explaining that the approach being taken with OUR child was not working and that he needed additional support. They also took it upon themselves to assume we mistreated our child instead of coming to us to ask why our child had a bruise on his cheek. We are members of this community, taxpayers, and people who have supported this facility. We trusted the Boys & Girls Club to provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for our child. Instead, we felt judged, unsupported, and treated as though our child and our family were a problem. This experience has been incredibly upsetting for our family. I sincerely hope the organization takes a serious look at how they train their staff, how they accommodate children with special needs, and how they communicate with the families who trust them with their children.

  • My daughter loves boys & girls club of Oyster Bay. She says "If there is a bee they let the kids in so the bees do not sting them."
