I did one of my practicums here for SOU when I was originally an elementary education major. I had a great time interacting with the children during playtime. Usually they invited me to play games with them and they would treat me as their own peer. We all ate lunch together and the children learned about sharing. The children had nap time in which they got a mat to sleep on. This helped them to relax and to take a break after a busy morning. Although my time was only for a short period, I did form bonds with the children and got to know them individually. I remember one time when I was going to the elementary across the street for another practicum, a little girl from HeadStart came to the fence and asked me: Are you the girl who helped me make the heart card? I told her yes, and she and her peers told me: Why don’t you come over here and play? I told them I couldn’t because I was going to help others at the elementary across the street. My heart felt warm after their invitation to play, and I will always be reminded of my experience volunteering here.
