What California does not publish here
The state publishes when licensing staff visited, not what they found. We do not hold California’s inspection findings, so nothing on this page tells you whether a visit resulted in a citation. A visit count is a measure of licensing activity, and a facility visited more often is not for that reason a worse one. Read the findings in California’s own facility search.

BHNS is such a special place, like a little tree house in the hill that feels like a second home more than a school, so it’s a great transition for young kids. There is so much warmth and care and the teachers – Betsy, Nisha and Kathleen - are so wonderful. They put so much attention and thought on each child. It’s a great place for little ones to develop social skills and grow at their own pace in a nurturing environment without stress or pressure. We feel so lucky to have found it.
Annique AnniqueDec 5, 2025BHNS is truly an incredible place!! I can not recommend it more highly. After a relatively sudden cross country move our daughter immediately felt comfortable here. Nisha, Betsy and Kathleen are truly expert at caring for and teaching toddlers. They create amazing new play areas each day to cultivate imaginative play. The parent community is wonderful, warm and welcoming. BHNS is a really special place, from its incredible teachers to its custom play area to its herb and vegetable garden, our family is so grateful for this adorable school.
Alia Luqman, LCSWDec 2, 2025My daughter started attending BHNS this August, and she absolutely loves it! We — parents and grandparents alike — couldn’t be happier. The facilities are wonderful and offer so many engaging activities for the kids. The teachers are warm, dedicated, and truly caring; so far, we have nothing but amazing things to say about them. We’re also very pleased with the parent community that’s beginning to take shape. BHNS has been a fantastic experience for our family.
Moyra Fernandez LabautNov 20, 2025We’re so happy we chose BHNS for our son. The nurturing atmosphere, thanks to the amazing teachers Kathleen and Nisha, makes the school feel like a peaceful retreat in the hills. Our son looks forward to going every day, and we’ve been amazed by how quickly he’s grown socially and verbally. The play-based learning really supports his curiosity. We couldn’t be happier with the experience .
Sahab YaqubiApr 19, 2025My two kids have absolutely loved the years they spent at BHNS. All the teachers are deeply effective, nurturing, and invested. They cultivate a tight-knit classroom and family community. I'm grateful to have this gem in Berkeley and I would highly recommend BHNS.
Shawn DrostApr 18, 2025I'm SO happy we chose BHNS for our son. We visited a handful of other nursery schools in the area that were all lovely, but none of them felt quite as warm and calming as BHNS. Mostly that's because of how loving the teachers Kathleen and Nisha are, but it's also because the school itself feels like a cozy little tree house tucked away in the hills. The kids have access to lots of safe outdoor space where they can explore, which I love. The school is play-based and the kids encouraged to follow their natural curiosity through hands-on experiences like art projects, music lessons, circle time, building, storytelling, and just generally tinkering around, asking questions and learning about their environment. I was a little nervous at first sending my toddler to school for the first time but even within the first week he didn't want to go home at the end of the day. He RUNS out the door every morning because he's so excited to see "Kaff-leen" and Nisha and all his classmates. I was also blown away by how quickly his social and verbal skills skyrocketed after starting school. That's been so cool to see and just cemented to me what an excellent decision this was. I wish every kid had the opportunity to go to school at a place like BHNS!

Questions parents ask about BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL
Is BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL a licensed child care provider in California?
- Yes. BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL holds California licence 010209453, currently listed as "LICENSED" by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, first issued on November 26, 1985. Confirm current standing with the agency before enrolling.
What kind of child care licence does BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL hold?
- California licenses BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL as a day care center, a category that covers preschool-age children in a centre-based programme. The category comes from the state's own licence record, not from the provider.
How many children can BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL care for?
- BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL is licensed for up to 40 children at one time. Licensed capacity is a ceiling set by the state, not a count of current enrolment or of available places.
How often has California inspected BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL?
- California records 2 inspection visits to BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL, the most recent on June 3, 2026 and the earliest on record September 28, 2023. The state publishes the dates of these visits but not what they found, so this count reflects licensing activity, not results. Read the findings themselves in California's own facility search.
Has California visited BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL in response to a complaint?
- California records no complaint-driven visits to BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL. That means no concern prompted a visit on the public record, which is not the same as a clean inspection history: the state does not publish what its visits found.
Who holds the licence for BERKELEY HILLS NURSERY SCHOOL?
- The licence is held by BERKELEY HILLS PARENTS' ASSOCIATION. California lists the licensee separately from the facility name, so the two often differ. The facility is in Alameda County.
